Whether as a result of divorce or establishment of paternity, a decision must be made about how to meet your
child’s financial needs. It is customary in Texas for the Court to order one parent to pay the other parent child
support to be used for the benefit of the child. Child support is often the subject of much tension and dispute
between parents. But regardless, parents are obligated to meet the financial needs of their children. More often
than not, child support is a calculation determined by the number of children to be supported and then based
upon the income and resources available to the paying parent, minus certain statutory deductions, including for
other children the paying parent is legally obligated to support. Payments may or may not be withheld from
paychecks, depending on the facts of your case.
At Cleaves Law Firm, our attorneys will provide guidance to you on this sensitive matter. We can assist you in
understanding what parents are legally obligated to provide under the Texas Family Code and the resulting
limitations imposed upon judges. We can also help you in the collaborative process or in settlement negotiations to craft a customized plan that
works better for you and the other parent to meet the financial needs of your children. Contact Cleaves Law Firm to advise you of your options,
entitlements and responsibilities regarding child support.
